Inspiration and motivation for the dashboard
I am a big fan of online courses, and during the past few years I have taken quite a few courses revolving around the Data Science world. I have also documented some of these learning adventures here on Medium:
Coursera’s Data Engineering with GCP Professional Certificate: better content or better marketing?
An honest review from a recently certified data student
The e-learning platforms I have found myself most frequently using have definitely been Udemy and Coursera.
So while having the possibility to access Udemy’s recently updated database of ~1200 most popular courses (last updated: May 2020) across various categories (Business, Design, Development, IT & Software, Personal Development, and Photograph, etc..), I figured it would be good to try to visualize the information in order to feel a less paralyzed by the sheer amount of options available when choosing the next course.
Therefore, I decided to develop a simple dashboard in Tableau, through which I could easily browse popular courses in categories I am interested with, check the relevant statistics for those courses, such as total enrolment numbers and average ratings, and click on the url of the course to be taken to its webpage to swiftly check it out.
Hopefully this will be useful for you if you are also looking for your next Udemy course!
The dashboard is up and running on my Tableau Public profile at the above link so you can start interacting with it straight away. Happy learning!
- Browse the top 100 courses around 10+ categories and drill down into various subcategories
- Get a glimpse of top categories and subcategories, as well as the ratings distribution compares across categories and subcategories (weighted by enrollment)
- Filter by Language, Average Rating, Total Students Enrolled, total course Duration in hours
- Search for specific courses by keyword
- Navigate to each course’s Udemy Webpage to check its curriculum and details
Let me know how you find it and if you have any feedback on how to make it better!
I am sure there are lots of tweaks that could be made to improve the dashboard, both in design and functionality.
